Tour Description

Even if you can’t make it to Japan or Fukuoka, you can enjoy the highlights of Hakata as you take a walking tour of the city from the comfort of your home.

Hakata, the ancient city that became part of Fukuoka prospered since the late 3rd century, and is said to be the oldest port town in Japan facing Hakata Bay. It played an important role not only as a domestic trading center, but also as a window for diplomacy and trade with mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. In the Middle Ages, it developed as a trading and commercial area, and was known as a merchant town with autonomy. During the Warring States period, the town was burned down due to war, but was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the area was ruled by Kuroda Nagamasa, who made a great contribution to the development of the town.

Hakata is now the gateway to Kyushu, with Hakata Station, Fukuoka Airport, and Hakata Port, and is an economic area with companies, national institutions, and commercial facilities. The area is also rich in culture and art, with the Asian Art Museum; Hakataza and other theater venues; and traditional crafts, such as Hakata dolls and textiles.

There are many festivals such as Hakata Gion Yamakasa and Hakata Dontaku; and the local people, called “Hakatakko,” are cheerful, friendly and full of love for their hometown. It is said that there are so many beautiful women in Hakata that there is even a term for them, “Hakata Bijin.” Let’s go on a live online walking tour together and enjoy the town of Hakata, one of the most popular destinations in Japan.
